Description: Oral history.; Interview conducted on January 5, 1978 with Miss Florence Mars at her home in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Mars was born on January 1, 1923 in Philadelphia, Mississippi. She studied at Millsaps College and University of Mississippi, where she graduated in 1944. Mars recorded her experiences and observations of the Philadelphia crisis that developed when three civil rights workers were murdered in her book, Witness in Philadelphia. Her efforts to determine the truth, and to work toward justice brought her under great pressure, including economic discrimination and near ostracism. She also discusses her experiences with the Philadelphia project, which was an effort by Pennsylvanians to cooperate with their Southern namesake.
