Photograph (positive image of a negative) of freedom Summer volunteers and local activists at a meeting held in an African American church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, during Freedom Summer 1964. Volunteer Johnanne "Johnnie" Winchester is speaking to the group. Others identified in the photograph are: volunteer Anne Koeppicus (front row to the left in the stripped shirt), volunteer "Big Daddy" (front row to the left of the pillar), Eric (last name unknown, behind "Big Daddy"), volunteer Phyllis Cunningham (second row to the right of the pillar), and local activist Gracie Hawthorne (front row to the right of the pillar).
