From the Thigpen (S.G.) Papers. Photograph of the Picayune YMCA Swimming Pool. Many people are swimming or sitting on benches on the far side of the pool. Children are lined up to use three diving boards, one high and two low. The pool is surrounded by a chain link fence. Buildings are visible in the background. The caption on the back of the photo gives the history of the YMCA. Can be found in the book Next Door to Heaven by S. G. Thigpen, with the caption, "Picayune YMCA was established in 1928. In purpose and guiding principle it is, as the name implies, Christian. All ages compose its membership. Over 400 boys take part in the baseball program each year, over 400 in the football program, many in the basketball program, the teen-age center is the meeting place for many hundreds of young people. Tennis, bowling, the annual Gulf Coast invitational basketball tournament, swimming, and shuffleboard are among the other activities. The 'Y' has been a great influence in the life of Picayune."
