One-page document dated December 4, 1871 and drafted by the Mississippi State Legislature requesting return of Federal lands first granted in 1856 for the purpose of building the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. The Gulf and Ship Island Railroad was chartered by the Mississippi Legislature in 1850, 1856, and 1887 for the purpose of building a railroad from Gulfport to Jackson; it operated from 1900 until acquired by the Illinois Central in 1924 and played a major role in the development of southern Mississippi.
