Letter from Samuel J. Gholson in Verona, Mississippi, to Brigadier General Daniel Ruggles in Columbus, Mississippi, recommending Captain J. F. White instead of Major Inge for command of troops in the First Military District. Gholson was a native of Madison County, Kentucky and a resident of Aberdeen, Mississippi. He served as a Mississippi legislator, a U.S. Congressman and federal judge. He was a captain and then a brigadier general in Confederate infantry and cavalry regiments. He served as Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, 1865-1867.
