Contract signed between private tutor William Westerman and representatives of twelve families in Warren County, Mississippi agreeing that Westerman will teach sixteen children of their children. The families include the Hyland, Rawls, and Gibson families, prominent in Warren County at the time. No information about Westerman has been located. Education in Mississippi in the early nineteenth century was limited to the children of affluent families, who sent their children to New Orleans or to Europe or who hired private tutors. Public education was first established in Warren County in 1845.
